Atiku Abubakar Criticizes President Tinubu’s Response to #EndBadGovernance Protests

Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu's recent address to the #EndBadGovernance protesters. Abubakar contends that Tinubu's speech failed to adequately address the profound suffering experienced by Nigerians amid ongoing economic hardships.

The protests, which erupted on August 1, 2024, saw thousands of youths across various cities in Nigeria voicing their frustration over widespread hunger and perceived poor governance. The demonstrators have been calling for significant reforms and improvements in living conditions.

In response, President Tinubu delivered a broadcast on Sunday, urging the protesters to halt their demonstrations. He emphasized that the removal of the fuel subsidy is a permanent measure and implied that this step would address the protesters' grievances.

However, Atiku Abubakar has criticized Tinubu’s response as insufficient and dismissive of the deeper economic issues plaguing the country. In a statement released on Sunday, Abubakar argued that the president’s address failed to acknowledge the severe financial strain that Nigerian families have been enduring since Tinubu assumed office.

"The president's remarks seem to overlook the reality faced by millions of Nigerians who are struggling with the fallout from economic policies," Atiku's statement read. "Addressing the fuel subsidy issue alone does not resolve the broader crisis of hunger and poor governance that is affecting our citizens."

Abubakar’s critique highlights the growing discontent with the current administration and underscores the need for more comprehensive solutions to Nigeria’s economic challenges. As the situation evolves, the discourse around governance and economic reform remains a critical issue for both political leaders and the general populace.
