Elon Musk announced on Saturday that the social media platform X would cease its operations in Brazil "effective immediately" in response to what it described as "censorship orders" issued by Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes.
X claims that Moraes secretly threatened one of its legal representatives in Brazil with arrest if the platform did not comply with orders to remove certain content. Brazil’s supreme court, where Moraes serves, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Despite this announcement, X remains accessible to users in Brazil, as stated by Musk's platform on Saturday.
Earlier this year, Moraes ordered X to block specific accounts as part of an investigation into "digital militias" accused of spreading fake news and hate speech during the tenure of former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.
In response to Musk's comments about reactivating accounts that Moraes had ordered blocked, the judge opened an inquiry into Musk, labeling his decisions regarding X as "unconstitutional."
Initially, Musk challenged Moraes's rulings, but X representatives later informed Brazil’s supreme court that the social media platform would comply with the legal orders.
In April, lawyers representing X in Brazil explained to the supreme court that "operational faults" had allowed some blocked users to remain active on the platform, following Moraes’s request for clarification on why X had not fully complied with his decisions.
Due to demands by “Justice” @Alexandre in Brazil that would require us to break (in secret) Brazilian, Argentinian, American and international law, 𝕏 has no choice but to close our local operations in Brazil.
