Federal Government to Meet with ASUU Leaders on August 26 Over Strike Notice

The Federal Government has scheduled a crucial meeting with the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for Monday, August 26, in an effort to address the union's recent strike notice.

ASUU had issued a 21-day strike ultimatum to the government on Wednesday, August 20, citing unresolved issues affecting Nigeria's universities. The union’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, announced the decision during a press briefing at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

In response, the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, confirmed on a TVC program on Thursday, August 22, that government officials are set to meet with ASUU representatives on Monday. The aim of the meeting is to discuss the union’s demands and address all outstanding issues.

"We have already sent out notice to the leadership of ASUU for us to meet on Monday," Prof. Mamman stated. "On Wednesday, we reviewed the letter submitted by ASUU and all the issues listed within it. It is our hope that by Monday, we will have a productive discussion."

He further acknowledged the long-standing nature of some of the issues, including the contentious 2009 agreement, which has its roots as far back as 1981. "We have been engaged in ongoing conversations with ASUU leadership regarding the challenges facing the university system, and we are committed to working together to resolve their concerns," Mamman added.

The outcome of Monday's meeting will be pivotal in determining whether the proposed strike will go ahead, as the government seeks to avert further disruptions to the nation's educational system.
