Former Chinese Football Association Vice President Sentenced to 11 Years for Bribery

A court in China has sentenced Li Yuyi, the former vice president of the Chinese Football Association (CFA), to 11 years in prison for accepting bribes and gifts in exchange for favors, according to a report by state news agency Xinhua on August 19.

Li, who served in influential positions at both the CFA and the Chinese Football Association Super League Company from 2004 to 2021, was also fined 1 million yuan (approximately $139,579). The court found that Li had received over $1.69 million in money and valuables in return for various forms of assistance.

In his final statement, Li admitted guilt and expressed remorse for his actions, Xinhua reported in March.

This sentencing is part of a broader crackdown on corruption within Chinese soccer, which has seen more than a dozen high-ranking officials investigated since late 2022. Previously, two former heads of the CFA were imprisoned for bribery offenses in 2012, receiving sentences of 10 and a half years.

In March of this year, the largest scandal to date emerged when a former chief of the CFA was sentenced to life in prison for accepting bribes exceeding $10 million.

The Chinese Communist Party, under President Xi Jinping's leadership, has prioritized anti-corruption measures as a key focus, with significant efforts aimed at rooting out corruption within high-level sports and other sectors.
