Misty Roberts Clanton, the recently resigned mayor of DeRidder, Louisiana, has been charged with the rape of a juvenile. Clanton, who stepped down from her position last week, was arrested on Thursday, August 1, on allegations that she engaged in sexual activities with a minor.
Clanton voluntarily turned herself in at the Beauregard Parish Detention Center and was subsequently booked on charges of third-degree rape. She was released later the same day on a $75,000 bond. Her attorney, Adam Johnson, has publicly stated her innocence, emphasizing that Clanton has not been convicted of any crime and expressing confidence in her eventual exoneration.
In a statement, Johnson criticized the handling of the case, noting that Clanton had not been contacted for an interview before the arrest warrant was issued. He reaffirmed her innocence and urged the public to respect her legal right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Clanton had announced her resignation just a week prior, citing a need to adjust her focus and priorities. Her resignation letter, issued on Friday, expressed her gratitude to the community and her pride in the achievements during her tenure. She had previously indicated a temporary leave of absence before formally stepping down.
The timing of her resignation, coupled with the serious allegations against her, has shocked the local community and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the charges. As the legal process unfolds, Clanton and her legal team continue to assert her innocence and seek to address the accusations.
