Yoruba Protester Threatened by Thugs in Lagos Over Ethnic Misidentification

In a disturbing turn of events, Funmi Jolade Ajayi, a Yoruba woman participating in a peaceful protest in Lagos, has reported being threatened by a group of thugs who mistook her for an Igbo person.

Ajayi was part of a demonstration in Ikeja aimed at voicing local grievances. As she was leaving the protest site, a group of men confronted her, accusing her of being Igbo and instructing her to return to her state to protest. The threats escalated as the men warned her of potential violence, saying, “We will still beat you all one by one.”

In a video statement, Ajayi shared her experience, expressing her dismay at the ethnic hostility. “They threatened me to leave!” she said. “He said, ‘Igbo person, what did you come here to do. We will still beat you all one by one.’”

Ajayi challenged the thugs' reasoning, affirming her right as a Nigerian to participate in protests regardless of her ethnicity. “My name is Funmi Jolade Ajayi. And even if I’m Omo Igbo, am I not a Nigerian?” she questioned.

The incident highlights the troubling nature of ethnic tensions and the challenges faced by protesters in Nigeria. Ajayi’s experience underscores the need for greater unity and tolerance in public demonstrations and broader societal interactions.
