At the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday, former Trump Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham delivered a scathing critique of Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, highlighting his lack of empathy, morals, and commitment to the truth. Grisham, who also served as a spokesperson for Melania Trump, shared firsthand experiences of the former president's behavior away from the public eye.
"I wasn’t just a Trump supporter; I was a true believer. I was one of his closest advisers, and the Trump family became like my own," Grisham said. She recounted her time spent at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence during holidays and her observations of Trump behind closed doors. "I saw him when the cameras were off. Trump mocks his supporters, calling them 'basement dwellers.' During a hospital visit where people were dying in the ICU, he was angry that the cameras weren’t focused on him."
Grisham revealed that Trump often instructed her to repeat false statements until people believed them. She also recounted an incident during the January 6 insurrection, where she asked Melania Trump if she could tweet a message condemning the violence. The first lady's response was a simple, "No."
Grisham received applause when she noted that she was the first senior staff member to resign on that fateful day. She concluded her speech with a powerful endorsement of Kamala Harris, stating, "I love my country more than my party. Kamala Harris tells the truth, she respects the American people, and she has my vote."
The Harris campaign and the Democratic National Convention have been emphasizing the voices of Republicans who have turned against Trump and are supporting the Democratic ticket. One such voice was Kyle Sweetser, an Alabama voter who previously supported Trump. Sweetser explained that Trump's tariffs had a detrimental impact on his work as a construction worker, leading him to reconsider his support. "I realized Trump wasn’t for me. He was for lining his own pockets," Sweetser said. He praised Kamala Harris for her commitment to tackling inflation and for embodying the qualities that should make Americans proud.
The convention has featured several prominent Republicans who have publicly opposed Trump, including Olivia Troye, a former national security staffer under Mike Pence; Adam Kinzinger, a former Republican representative and vocal Trump critic; John Giles, the Republican mayor of Mesa, Arizona; and Geoff Duncan, the former lieutenant governor of Georgia.
Additionally, Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer and fixer, made an appearance at the convention. Though it was unclear if he would speak, Cohen, who testified against Trump in a hush-money trial in New York, indicated he was open to addressing the crowd, saying, "Of course I would."
