French President Denies Political Motives Behind Telegram Founder’s Arrest

French President Emmanuel Macron has rejected allegations of political influence in the recent arrest of Telegram founder Pavel Durov. The tech billionaire, known for creating the encrypted messaging platform with over 900 million users, was detained at a Paris airport amid accusations related to illegal content on his platform.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Macron labeled the claims of political motivation as "false information." He clarified that Durov's arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and emphasized, "It is in no way a political decision. It is up to the judges to rule on the matter."

Durov, who holds both Russian and French citizenship, has been in French custody since Sunday. His detention was extended through Wednesday as authorities continue their investigation. The tech entrepreneur could either be released or formally charged after his initial 96-hour detention period.

The arrest has sparked interest due to its timing and Durov’s background. Arriving in Paris from Baku, Azerbaijan, Durov appeared to be aware of potential legal risks. Speculations about his motives for traveling to France despite legal concerns have arisen, with suggestions that he may have felt secure.

French officials, particularly from the Office for the Fight Against Violence towards Minors (OFMIN), are examining Durov for alleged offenses including fraud, drug trafficking, cyberbullying, organized crime, and the promotion of terrorism. The primary focus is on Telegram’s alleged failure to control illegal content on the platform.

Telegram has defended Durov, asserting that he "has nothing to hide" and that the platform complies with EU regulations, including the Digital Services Act. The company rejected the notion that Durov or Telegram should be held accountable for user-generated illegal activities.

The case has drawn global attention, with notable figures such as Elon Musk expressing support for Durov. Musk used the hashtag #FreePavel and questioned the situation with a post that read, "Liberte Liberte! Liberte?" (Freedom Freedom! Freedom?).

Macron has reiterated France's dedication to freedom of expression while underscoring the importance of operating within legal boundaries. "It is up to the judiciary, in full independence, to enforce the law," Macron concluded.

As the legal process unfolds, the international tech community remains vigilant, given Telegram's influential role in global communications and its use in various geopolitical contexts, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
