In a recent interview on Channels Television, Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has made headlines by alleging that opposition politicians are using the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests as a vehicle for "political revenge" following their defeat in recent elections.
Governor Sani, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), claimed that members of the opposition are manipulating vulnerable individuals to join the protests, which have been marked by calls for improved governance and economic reforms. He urged those dissatisfied with the current administration to channel their grievances through the democratic process rather than through demonstrations.
During his appearance on August 2, 2024, Sani expressed frustration with some protest leaders whom he accused of neglecting their duties by leaving the demonstrations in the hands of children rather than taking an active leadership role. Drawing from his own experiences as an activist during Nigeria's military era, Sani reflected on his past involvement in protests against military excesses, which included facing arrest and detention.
The governor also touched on internal party discussions regarding the idea of organizing counter-protests. While some of his party members suggested this as a response to the ongoing demonstrations, Sani rejected the idea. He reiterated his respect for the right to protest, citing his own history of exercising this right during Nigeria's military dictatorship.
As tensions continue to rise, Sani’s comments add another layer of complexity to the discourse surrounding the #EndBadGovernance protests, highlighting the deep-seated political divisions and the challenges faced in addressing public discontent.
