Heartland FC has shared details about the tragic death of their coach, Christian Obi, who was killed in a severe bus accident on Friday in Imo State.
In a statement released by the club’s Media Officer, Tunde Liadi, it was revealed that the accident occurred around 4:00 p.m. in Okwelle, Onuimo Local Government Area. The team’s Coaster bus collided with a stationary truck while attempting to avoid a head-on crash with an oncoming vehicle.
At least 20 team members were on board the bus, with some players sustaining various injuries. The team was en route to the TICO/SELECT Ifeanyi Ekwueme Preseason Tournament in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, when the accident occurred.
Liadi explained that despite the driver's efforts to prevent the collision, the impact caused severe trauma to Coach Obi. He was found unconscious with a minor injury to his right leg and was immediately taken to a nearby private hospital for emergency care.
Unfortunately, despite the medical team’s best efforts, Coach Obi passed away. Liadi expressed the profound grief felt by the club, noting the deep impact of Obi’s death on everyone associated with Heartland FC.
“The devastating news of his death has plunged the entire club into mourning,” Liadi said. “Coach Obi’s legacy will forever be remembered, particularly for his role in leading the club to an unbeaten run in the Nigeria National League during the 2022-23 season, culminating in the League Super 8 victory in Asaba.”
The club has requested privacy during this difficult time, while expressing appreciation for the support and concern from the football community. Coach Obi’s remains have been transferred to the Federal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) in Owerri, where the injured players are also receiving treatment.
