JD Vance Criticizes Childless Teachers in Resurfaced 2021 Remarks

JD Vance, the Republican vice-presidential candidate and US senator from Ohio, has faced renewed scrutiny following the resurfacing of controversial comments from 2021. In the newly emerged clip, Vance, speaking at a forum hosted by the Center for Christian Virtue, criticized “leaders on the left,” including Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, for not having children.

In the video, Vance expresses frustration with what he views as a lack of parental perspective among left-leaning figures, stating, “So many of the leaders of the left, and I hate to be so personal about this, but they’re people without kids trying to brainwash the minds of our children, that really disorients me and disturbs me.” He specifically targets Weingarten, saying, “If she wants to brainwash and destroy the minds of children, she should have some of her own and leave ours the hell alone.”

Weingarten responded to the resurfaced comments via a post on X, calling them “gross” and “sad and insulting to millions of modern families and school teachers, including Catholic nuns, none of whom should be targeted for their family decisions.” She defended the contributions of teachers, emphasizing that they work diligently to support all students.

The remarks have gained significant traction online, with Kamala Harris’s campaign sharing the clip as part of a broader discussion on Vance’s statements. A spokesperson for Vance, Taylor Van Kirk, asserted that the senator will “continue to loudly call this crap out to defend our kids,” framing his comments as a critique of what he perceives as “leftwing indoctrination” in schools.

This controversy follows another recent backlash against Vance over a 2021 comment in which he referred to prominent Democrats as “a bunch of childless cat ladies,” a remark he later described as sarcastic. Additionally, Vance has previously suggested that individuals without children should face higher taxes and that those with children should have greater voting power.

The resurfacing of these comments has intensified debates about Vance's suitability as a vice-presidential candidate, highlighting ongoing tensions surrounding education, family values, and political rhetoric.
