Kobe Bryant’s Staples Center Locker Sells for $2.9 Million at Sotheby’s Auction

A locker once used by NBA legend Kobe Bryant has fetched a remarkable $2.9 million at Sotheby’s auction in New York, far surpassing its estimated value. The locker, which Bryant utilized during his storied career with the Los Angeles Lakers, was sold as part of a rare sports memorabilia auction.

The auction price nearly doubled the initial estimate of $1.5 million, underscoring the profound impact of Bryant’s legacy. The locker was in use at the Staples Center, where Bryant spent his entire 20-year NBA career, from 1996 to 2016.

The piece was saved from being discarded during a 2018 renovation of the Staples Center by a maintenance worker. It was later acquired by an American collector before being auctioned.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles, remarked on the sale, “Today’s price highlights not only Kobe’s enduring legacy but also the exceptional nature of this unique item.” The locker’s sale was the result of 19 competitive bids.

The Sotheby’s auction also featured memorabilia from other sports icons, including Michael Jordan and Reggie Jackson, alongside contemporary stars like Rafael Nadal and Stephen Curry. The sale of Bryant’s locker stands out as a testament to his lasting influence and the high regard in which he is held by fans and collectors alike.
