Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has strongly condemned and dismissed reports circulating on social media that urge the Igbo people to leave Lagos and Southwest Nigeria. The call for an "IgboMustGo" protest, allegedly scheduled from August 20th to 30th, 2024, was made via a social media handle known as LagosPedia on X (formerly Twitter).
In a statement issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu expressed his disapproval of the provocative and divisive rhetoric. The statement read, “The attention of Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has been drawn to a post by LagosPedia that calls on the Igbo to vacate Lagos and Southwest Nigeria. The Governor and the Lagos State Government wish to distance themselves from this reckless and dangerous rhetoric.”
Sanwo-Olu criticized the post as an attempt to create discord between the Yoruba and other ethnic groups, particularly those who have made Lagos their home. He emphasized that Lagos is a city for all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic background.
The governor appealed to Lagos residents to remain united and not be swayed by inflammatory messages. He also called on security agencies to investigate the origin of the social media post and take appropriate action against those responsible.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents of his commitment to maintaining peace and harmony in the state, urging everyone to disregard such divisive messages and support efforts towards unity and stability in Lagos.
This response highlights the governor's dedication to fostering inclusivity and addressing any attempts to incite ethnic tensions within Lagos.
