Maiduguri Dry Inland Port to Begin Operations in Six Months, Says Governor Zulum

 

State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has announced that the Maiduguri dry inland port is expected to commence operations within six months.

Governor Zulum made this statement on Wednesday in Lagos following a courtesy visit to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Pius Akutah.

The governor highlighted that the new inland port will significantly benefit both the state government and the local population. “The establishment of the inland dry port in Maiduguri will open up numerous opportunities, including job creation. It will provide employment for many young people, which is crucial,” Zulum said.

He also emphasized the strategic location of Borno State, which shares borders with Niger, Chad, and Cameroon. The port is expected to enhance cross-border trade and contribute positively to the state's economy. “This development will improve relationships with our neighboring countries, boost the national economy, and positively impact our GDP,” he added.

Pius Akutah, Executive Secretary of the NSC, supported the governor's remarks, stating that the establishment of the port would be instrumental for Borno State given its proximity to the three neighboring countries. Akutah noted, “The inland dry port in Maiduguri will significantly bolster trans-border trade. With the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in place, having such critical infrastructure is essential for regions like Borno that are close to multiple countries.”

The establishment of the Maiduguri dry inland port is anticipated to play a pivotal role in enhancing regional trade and economic development.
