The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, has decided to withdraw the contentious Counter Subversion Bill. The decision follows widespread criticism and public backlash against the proposed legislation.
The withdrawal was announced on Wednesday through a statement issued by the Speaker's spokesperson, Musa Krishi. The bill, which had sparked controversy, included stringent penalties for individuals who refused to sing the national anthem.
Initially, Abbas Tajudeen defended the bill, citing similar measures in other countries as a basis for its introduction. However, the Speaker's Office later issued a statement retracting the bill, acknowledging the public's concerns.
“The Speaker recognizes the importance of the issues raised and the significant attention the Bill has attracted. He affirms his commitment to actions that uphold national peace and unity,” the statement read.
