Millions of Americans Brace for Extreme Heat Ahead of Labor Day Weekend

As Labor Day weekend approaches, millions of Americans are set to endure sweltering temperatures, with much of the country under excessive heat warnings. The heatwave that scorched the U.S. Midwest earlier this week has now spread to the eastern half of the country, putting over 20 million people under heat alerts.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has warned that cities across central U.S. states, including Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana, as well as coastal cities in South Carolina and Virginia, are experiencing severe heat with heat index values soaring to 105°F (40°C). The extreme temperatures pose significant risks, especially for those without access to effective cooling or adequate hydration.

“This level of heat affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration," the NWS stated. "Impacts are likely in some health systems, heat-sensitive industries, and infrastructure.”

Meteorologists predict a break from the oppressive heat for the East Coast just in time for Labor Day, as a cold front is expected to bring relief. However, the Southeast could experience scattered storms over the weekend.

The climate crisis, largely driven by fossil fuel consumption, deforestation, and methane emissions, is intensifying the frequency, duration, and severity of heatwaves, according to the World Health Organization. Extreme heat is now the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the U.S., killing approximately 1,220 people annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The extreme heat poses particular dangers to athletes, outdoor workers, children, the elderly, disabled individuals, people experiencing homelessness, emergency responders, and those who are incarcerated. The American Red Cross advises people in affected areas to limit outdoor activities, avoid sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic beverages, and stay in air-conditioned environments whenever possible.

As the heatwave continues to bear down, staying cool and hydrated will be crucial to avoid the life-threatening impacts of the relentless heat.
