A tragic incident occurred off the coast of Sicily when the yacht Bayesian, carrying UK tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, sank during a violent storm. Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance, are among the six missing. Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah, are also unaccounted for.
The British-flagged yacht, with 22 people on board, was anchored near Porticello when it was struck by a tornado. The Italian coastguard confirmed one death, and 15 people, including Lynch's wife and a one-year-old girl, were rescued. The vessel has sunk to a depth of 49 meters, and rescue divers are continuing their search for the missing.
The incident follows news that Stephen Chamberlain, Lynch’s co-defendant in a US fraud trial, died after being struck by a car in England. Chamberlain had been placed on life support but later succumbed to his injuries. The storm that sank the yacht was exacerbated by unusually high sea temperatures around Sicily, raising concerns about extreme weather due to global warming.
