In response to escalating economic challenges and hunger, thousands of Nigerians took to the streets across Lagos, Osun, and Oyo states. Demonstrators gathered in various locations, including Ikeja, Ojota, and Lekki in Lagos, and major roads in Ibadan and Osogbo, to voice their dissatisfaction with the current government and its handling of the economic crisis.
The protests, which began in the morning, saw participants brandishing placards demanding immediate government action to alleviate the rising cost of living. Slogans like “Save us from hunger” and “Stop corruption” were prominently displayed. Despite a court ruling restricting protests to designated areas, many activists defied these orders, leading to confrontations with police.
In Lagos, businesses and public offices remained closed as a precaution against potential looting. The protest turned tense at the Lekki tollgate when security forces deployed teargas to disperse the crowd. Similar scenes played out in Ibadan, where protesters marched through major streets, and in Osogbo, where demonstrators also rallied for change.
Protest leaders emphasized that this demonstration was merely a precursor to a longer, more sustained campaign if their demands for economic relief and policy reforms are not met. The protests have significantly disrupted daily life, with businesses, banks, and government offices across the states shutting down to avoid any potential unrest.
