Nigeria's women's basketball team, D’Tigress, have climbed to eighth place in the latest global rankings released by the Federation of International Basketball Association (FIBA) on Thursday, August 29. This marks a significant achievement for the team, as they are now the first African team—male or female—to break into the top 10 of FIBA's world rankings.
Under the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress achieved this milestone following a stellar performance at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The African champions showcased their strength and skill with impressive victories over higher-ranked teams, including Australia and Canada.
D’Tigress also made history by becoming the first African team to advance to the quarter-finals in Olympic basketball. Their remarkable journey at the Games, however, ended in the quarter-finals where they were defeated by the United States, the eventual gold medal winners.
In the updated FIBA rankings, the United States retains the top spot, followed by Australia in second place. France, China, and Spain round out the top five teams globally.
On the African continent, Nigeria continues to lead the pack, with Mali, Senegal, Mozambique, and Cameroon completing the top five teams in Africa.
D’Tigress' rise in the rankings reflects their growing reputation and competitiveness on the world stage, setting a new standard for African basketball.
