A chaotic incident unfolded aboard a Jetstar flight when a passenger made an alarming decision to exit the aircraft in an unconventional manner. The man, reportedly in his 30s, opened the emergency exit door just as Jetstar flight JQ507 from Sydney landed at Melbourne Airport, Australia, around 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 22.
After opening the door, the passenger jumped onto the aircraft's wing and slid down the evacuation slide, only to be quickly restrained by ground staff. Before his abrupt exit, flight attendants had repeatedly instructed him to remain seated as he paced around the cabin, ignoring their directives. Fellow passengers, witnessing the unfolding drama, shouted at the man, pleading with him to "please sit down."
The man was subsequently arrested, and the other passengers were safely disembarked from the plane.
A passenger named Adam, who was seated nearby, recounted the event, noting that the man appeared to be in a disturbed mental state. He described how, as the plane was taxiing to the gate, the man ignored instructions to stay seated and ultimately reached for the emergency exit handle. Despite passengers' efforts to restrain him, the man managed to open the door and escape onto the wing.
"It was a very tense situation," Adam said. "People were screaming, and the woman seated in the emergency exit row was clearly traumatized."
A Jetstar spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the passenger had "opened the emergency exit door after arrival in Melbourne, which automatically deployed the slide." The spokesperson added that the plane was parked at the gate when the incident occurred and that the passenger had been taken into custody by the Australian Federal Police.
