Philadelphia Mayor’s Tweet Sparks VP Pick Controversy

Philadelphia's political scene erupted in a brief frenzy on Friday after a tweet and video, mistakenly shared by a staffer of Mayor Cherelle Parker, appeared to suggest that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro was set to be announced as Kamala Harris’s vice-presidential running mate.

The video, which was intended for release next Monday, unexpectedly revealed Shapiro’s potential selection ahead of the official announcement. Ernest Owens, a reporter with Philadelphia Magazine, was among the first to highlight the situation, causing what he described as a “firestorm” of speculation and excitement.

Owens tweeted, “Philly political sources have told me that a staffer connected with Mayor Cherelle Parker’s team accidentally posted the video today. The video was scheduled for Monday… after VP Kamala Harris was expected to announce her pick. It’s Josh Shapiro, y’all.”

Despite the stir, a reporter from the Philadelphia Inquirer quickly countered the claim, suggesting that the situation was not as dramatic as it appeared. Sean Collins Walsh clarified that the tweet did not constitute an official announcement but was rather an expression of Parker's support for Shapiro, who is among the names being considered for the vice-presidential slot.

A statement from a source close to Mayor Parker echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the video was simply a gesture of support and not a formal declaration of Shapiro’s candidacy. The Guardian confirmed this, noting that the video was meant to highlight Parker’s backing of Shapiro rather than confirm any official appointment.

Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, is expected to announce her vice-presidential pick soon, with a rally scheduled in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Shapiro, along with other potential candidates like Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, and Senator Mark Kelly from Arizona, has been under consideration.

The video posted by @PeopleforParker showcased an enthusiastic endorsement of both Harris and Shapiro, with Parker stating, “I can’t think of a better partner than our governor, Josh Shapiro.”

As speculation swirls, Shapiro’s response to the situation was light-hearted. When asked about his plans following the cancellation of a scheduled fundraiser, he joked, “Y’all think I’m going to tell you what I’m doing? Come on.”

The incident underscores the high stakes and intense media scrutiny surrounding Harris’s vice-presidential selection, a decision that could significantly impact the upcoming presidential race against Republican candidate Donald Trump
