Authorities in Makueni County, Kenya, have apprehended three individuals, including a police officer, in connection with a bold highway robbery involving a lorry transporting 522 bags of rice.
The suspects are accused of hijacking the Isuzu lorry, with registration number KCY 107U, as it traveled from Mombasa to Nairobi. The vehicle was overtaken by six armed men in the Thange area, who commandeered both the lorry and its valuable cargo.
The arrests were made following a thorough investigation by the Kibwezi Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Among those detained is Francis Mutiso, a police officer stationed at Kibwezi Police Station, who reportedly participated in the heist while in uniform and armed. The other suspects identified are Juda Kipkoech Kandie and John Maingi.
The stolen lorry, which was carrying 25-kilogram bags of rice, was later recovered in the Manyanga area, close to Kibwezi. The driver of the lorry was found unharmed in the Ngwata area, having been abandoned by the robbers.
In addition to the lorry, police also seized a Probox vehicle, registration number KDD 396T, which is suspected to have been used during the robbery. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and authorities are working to address the broader implications of the crime.
