President Tinubu Approves Immediate Reconstruction of Wagga Bridge Linking Adamawa and Borno

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the swift reconstruction of the Wagga bridge, which connects Adamawa and Borno states. The announcement was made on Sunday by Mohammed Goni, the Director-General of the North East Development Commission (NEDC).

Goni made this disclosure while inspecting the bridge, which has collapsed for the second time in two months. Located in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa, the bridge's repeated failures have posed significant challenges for the local community.

"We conducted an assessment during our first inspection, but with the complete collapse, a new task is ahead of us," Goni stated. "We were here about two months ago when the first incident happened and promised to fix the problem. Unfortunately, before actions could start, the situation worsened."

Goni emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that this marks the third major damage to the bridge. However, he expressed optimism, revealing that President Tinubu has approved its immediate reconstruction to alleviate the hardships faced by residents and travelers.

Due to the ongoing rainy season, immediate work on the bridge may be delayed. However, Goni assured that alternative solutions would be provided to facilitate the movement of vehicles. "People coming from Maiduguri have to stop over there. Since we are here, we will see what we can do," he added.

Goni also promised the reconstruction of other damaged culverts along the road, further enhancing infrastructure in the area.

Local resident Malam Mohammed Saidu confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon had washed away the bridge. He highlighted the significant challenges faced by the community, including difficulty accessing markets in Goza, Borno, and the inability of people from Borno to cross over.

Saidu appealed to both federal and state governments for immediate assistance, stressing that the situation could severely impact farmers during the harvest season.
