A group of 63 retired Nigerian soldiers who served during the Civil War have made a formal appeal to the federal government to settle their long-overdue pension arrears. These veterans, enlisted between 1967 and 1978, have reported that they have not received their pension payments despite President Muhammadu Buhari's approval of N134.7 billion for military veteran pensions in 2020.
The situation was brought to light by Alhaji Bello Oseni, the secretary for the retired soldiers. He revealed that their documentation was verified by the Military Pensioner Board in 2023, yet the retirees are still awaiting their payments.
The affected soldiers, aged between 76 and 85, are facing financial difficulties and some continue to live in their aging family homes built in the 1920s and 1930s.
In their statement, the retired soldiers have called on former presidents, members of the Senate and House of Representatives, senior advocates of Nigeria, human rights activists, and other influential figures to assist in recovering their pension payments. They have specifically appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and legislative bodies to address their plight.
Additionally, they have urged civil society organizations to advocate on their behalf to ensure their pension payments are promptly disbursed.
