De Renaissance Patriots, a group of Lagos indigenes, has issued a strong rebuttal against being associated with the controversial 'Igbos Must Leave Lagos' slogan. They described such an association as shameful and irresponsible, and rejected claims that they are a far-right socio-cultural organization.
In a statement from its media office, the group condemned the report that labeled them as far-right, arguing that the characterization is both unfounded and misleading. The group asserted that the report failed to accurately represent their mission and history, and that it incorrectly linked them to entities fostering ethnic discord in Lagos.
The statement read: “We categorically reject the far-right label applied to De Renaissance Patriots Foundation. As a distinguished socio-cultural group composed of eminent citizens of Nigeria, we find this pejorative term to be both uncharitable and inappropriate.”
The group emphasized that their primary objective is to address what they view as systemic marginalization of indigenous Lagosians by non-native rulers. They expressed disapproval of the way the report misrepresented their goals and historical context, particularly in relation to past constitutional conferences and political figures.
“It is disgraceful to associate our reputable organization with the hashtag #IgbosMustLeaveLagos,” the statement continued. “Our mission is to promote Lagosian social and cultural values and ensure that native citizens have a significant role in their state's affairs.”
De Renaissance Patriots has called for a reevaluation of the claims against them and asserted that their commitment remains focused on cultural preservation and fair representation for Lagos indigenes.
