Jamaican dancehall icon Spice has publicly disagreed with reggae legend Buju Banton's recent remarks about Afrobeats music. In an appearance on the ‘Drink Champs’ podcast, Banton criticized Afrobeats artists for allegedly prioritizing personal gain over addressing societal issues, and claimed that the genre lacks substance and will eventually fade. He also accused Afrobeats musicians of appropriating Jamaican reggae and dancehall without proper acknowledgment.
In response, Spice took to Instagram Live for an interview with Nigerian media personality Daddy Freeze, where she defended Afrobeats. She asserted that the genre is not "f*ckery" and expressed her admiration for Afrobeats.
“I don’t think Afrobeats is f*ckery. It’s absurd to say that,” Spice stated. She emphasized that there are Afrobeats artists who produce socially conscious music, citing Burna Boy’s tracks like “EndSARS” and “Monsters You Made” as examples of culturally relevant songs. Spice also highlighted other artists like 2Face and Falz, who address political issues in their music.
Spice argued that Buju Banton's perspective might stem from a lack of understanding of the diversity within the Afrobeats genre. “The problem with Buju Banton is that he doesn’t understand that artists are different. So, I think it’s harsh to say a genre is f*ckery, especially one that’s doing very well. We can’t deny it. I’m the queen of dancehall but Afrobeats is ruling the world now,” she concluded.
