The Super Falcons' disappointing exit from the women's football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics has been attributed to inadequate preparation, according to head coach Randy Waldrum.
The Nigerian team was eliminated from the competition after a 3-1 defeat to Japan on Wednesday. This loss followed earlier setbacks against Brazil and Spain, which saw the Super Falcons unable to secure any victories in the group stage.
In an interview with ESPN, Waldrum expressed frustration over the team's preparation. He revealed that the squad's readiness for the tournament was compromised by several factors. "We prepared for them based on the fact that we haven’t had a lot of time," Waldrum explained.
The coach highlighted that the team's preparation was particularly impacted by missing a crucial training window just before the Olympics. "We missed the last window before the Olympics, and so we missed 10 days of good training before the Olympics," he said.
Adding to the challenge were visa issues that delayed the arrival of some players to the training camp, further hampering the team's ability to fully prepare for the competition.
The Super Falcons' early exit from the tournament has raised concerns about the team's preparation strategies and the broader implications for Nigerian women's football. As the team reflects on their performance, the focus will likely shift towards addressing these preparation issues to better equip the squad for future international competitions.
