Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman and Iraq War veteran, has endorsed Republican nominee Donald Trump in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Gabbard, who ran for president in the Democratic primary in 2020 and later left the party, announced her support during a National Guard Association conference in Detroit, Michigan, where Trump was also speaking.
Gabbard expressed her concern about the current administration's foreign policy, stating, "This administration has us facing multiple wars on multiple fronts and closer to the brink of nuclear war than we ever have been before. This is one of the main reasons why I’m committed to doing all that I can to send President Trump back to the White House, where he can once again serve as our commander-in-chief."
Gabbard, who once represented Hawaii in Congress and served as vice-chair of the Democratic National Committee, accused Democratic nominee Kamala Harris of retaliating against political opponents and undermining civil liberties. She called on Americans to reject what she described as "an anti-freedom culture of political retaliation and abuse of power."
Her endorsement comes on the heels of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a member of a prominent Democratic family, suspending his own presidential campaign to support Trump. Additionally, Elon Musk, who has previously identified as a moderate Democrat, has also thrown his support behind the former president.
The Democratic National Committee dismissed Gabbard's endorsement, with Rapid Response Director Alex Floyd criticizing Trump for seeking support from figures like Gabbard and Kennedy. Floyd stated, "Donald Trump’s Maga brand is so toxic that he’s resorted to touting support from off-putting extremists like RFK Jr. and Tulsi Gabbard."
Trump, during his address in Detroit, praised Gabbard, highlighting her military service and calling her "a special person" with "great common sense" and "great spirit." He emphasized that the current political struggle is not just between Democrats and Republicans but between "communism and freedom."
Gabbard has reportedly been assisting Trump in preparing for the upcoming presidential debate against Harris. The two have clashed in the past, notably during a 2020 debate when Gabbard criticized Harris's record as a prosecutor, a moment that continues to resonate in conservative circles.
As Trump commemorated the third anniversary of a suicide bombing in Afghanistan that claimed the lives of 13 U.S. service members, he used the occasion to criticize Harris and President Joe Biden for what he described as the collapse of American credibility following the withdrawal from Afghanistan.
In response, Harris issued a statement mourning the loss of the 13 service members and expressing her condolences to their families and loved ones, saying, "My heart breaks for their pain and their loss."
