Renowned singer Burna Boy has sparked discussions with his recent remarks about Nigeria, describing the nation as "collateral damage" in light of its ongoing challenges.
In an interview with Tidal, Burna Boy likened Nigeria to a former British entity, referring to it as the "Royal Niger Company." His comments, which have since gained traction on social media, highlight his concerns about the lingering effects of poor governance and external exploitation on the Nigerian populace.
Reflecting on Nigeria's origins, Burna Boy expressed skepticism about the country's very existence, suggesting that Nigeria was never intended to be a nation in its own right.
"We weren't supposed to be Nigerians from the beginning. We were part of the Royal Niger Company, essentially a business venture for the British to extract resources for their benefit," Burna Boy stated. "At some point, the company decided to acquire the entire territory and amalgamate it."
He further remarked that, in this process, those who orchestrated and benefited from these transactions emerged as the victors, while the Nigerian people were left as mere "collateral damage."
