World's Oldest Person, Maria Branyas, Passes Away at 117

Maria Branyas, an American-born Spaniard recognized as the world's oldest living person, has passed away at the age of 117. Her family confirmed her peaceful death through a heartfelt post on her X (formerly Twitter) account, stating in Catalan, "Maria Branyas has left us. She has gone the way she wanted: in her sleep, at peace, and without pain."

Born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco, Ms. Branyas moved to Spain with her family at a young age. At the time of her passing, she resided in a nursing home in the town of Olot, located in the Catalonia region.

Ms. Branyas had a lively presence on social media, where her account, named "Super Catalan Grandma," humorously described her as "old, very old, but not an idiot." In her final post, she expressed a sense of acceptance, writing, "The time is near. Don’t cry, I don’t like tears. And above all, don’t suffer for me. Wherever I go, I will be happy."

The Gerontology Research Group, which authenticates the ages of supercentenarians, had recognized Ms. Branyas as the oldest known person in the world following the death of French nun Lucile Randon last year at 118 years old.

The next oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group, is Tomiko Itooka from Japan, who is currently 116 years old. The record for the longest confirmed human lifespan still belongs to Frenchwoman Jeanne Calment, who lived to be 122 years and 164 days old before her death in 1997.
