"67 Million Tune In for Harris-Trump Debate, with Kamala Harris Declared Winner by Majority of Viewers"

An estimated 67.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the highly anticipated debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, marking a 31% rise in viewership compared to the June debate between Trump and Joe Biden. That earlier debate had eventually led to Biden dropping out of the 2024 race.

Nielsen, the ratings company, reported that the debate aired on 17 networks, with ABC News as the main broadcaster. In contrast, the June debate between Trump and Biden attracted 51.3 million viewers. While Tuesday's numbers were impressive, they fell short of the record 84 million viewers who watched Trump and Hillary Clinton's first debate in 2016. The 2020 debate between Trump and Biden had 73.1 million viewers.

This debate saw a notable surge in younger and middle-aged viewers, with a 53% increase among adults aged 18-49 compared to the previous Trump-Biden debate. Fox News attracted the largest number of cable viewers, with 9.1 million people watching on the channel known for its favorable coverage of Trump.

According to a CNN flash poll, Kamala Harris was widely seen as the debate’s winner, with 63% of viewers saying she outperformed Trump, compared to 37% who favored Trump. Prior to the debate, those polled were evenly split on who would perform better. Among Harris-supporting viewers, 96% believed she excelled, while 69% of Trump supporters felt the same about their candidate.

Despite Trump’s campaign claiming victory, insiders suggested that it was unlikely he swayed undecided voters.

Shortly after the debate, pop star Taylor Swift endorsed Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, to her 283 million Instagram followers, linking to Vote.gov, which saw nearly 338,000 new visitors afterward. Swift’s endorsement is expected to have a strong influence on younger voters, with 30% of Americans under 35 saying they are more likely to support candidates Swift endorses, according to a Newsweek poll.

While no further presidential debates are scheduled, a vice-presidential debate between Tim Walz and JD Vance is set for October 1, hosted by CBS.
