Adamawa Police Arrest Released Prisoner for 'Shila Gangsterism'

The Adamawa State Police Command has arrested a young man, Khalifa Modibbo, for alleged involvement in "Shila gangsterism," a term used locally to describe crimes such as phone snatching and theft carried out by young individuals known as Shila Boys.

Khalifa, a resident of Hayin Gada in Girei Local Government Area, was apprehended just two weeks after being released from prison. His release was part of a prison decongestion initiative led by the state government, which reviewed the cases of certain inmates.

He was among 100 inmates, either awaiting trial or convicted, who were granted freedom by the Jail Delivery Committee, chaired by the state Chief Judge, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman. Khalifa had previously been arrested and imprisoned earlier this year for criminal conspiracy and theft but was released after serving six months in custody.

Despite his recent release, the 18-year-old, along with an accomplice, Ibrahim Garba, was arrested again for theft. According to the police, the two carried out the crime in typical Shila Boy fashion, targeting a victim while operating a tricycle. Khalifa, pretending to be a passenger, reportedly stole N26,000 from another passenger's pocket while Garba drove.

The victim noticed the theft and cleverly directed the tricycle to a nearby police station at Wuro Hausa, where he raised the alarm. The suspects were then apprehended and handed over to the authorities.

Confirming the incident, the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Ngurore, stated that the Commissioner of Police, Morris Dankombo, has ordered a thorough investigation and subsequent prosecution of the suspects.
