Caroline Ellison Sentenced to Two Years for Role in FTX Fraud Scandal

Caroline Ellison, the former CEO of Alameda Research and key figure in the FTX cryptocurrency collapse, has been sentenced to 24 months in prison by a Manhattan federal court. Ellison, once the romantic partner of disgraced FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried, played a significant role in the $8 billion fraud that led to FTX’s downfall. She also became a central witness in the trial that saw Bankman-Fried convicted.

Ellison, who ran Alameda Research, the trading arm of FTX, was found guilty of helping to misuse billions of customer funds to cover risky investments and personal luxuries. The company’s collapse, once valued at $32 billion, stemmed from fraudulent efforts to prop up Alameda using FTX’s finances.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who also sentenced Bankman-Fried to 25 years, highlighted Ellison’s extensive cooperation with prosecutors as a reason for her lighter sentence. While Ellison faced potential decades behind bars, her assistance in convicting Bankman-Fried was considered "exemplary" by prosecutors, earning her a reduced punishment. However, Kaplan stressed that her involvement in the fraud warranted prison time. Along with the jail term, Ellison must forfeit approximately $11 billion in assets.

During her sentencing, Ellison expressed remorse, admitting her role in deceiving FTX customers and apologizing for her actions. She had previously pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and money laundering in late 2022 as part of a plea deal.

Ellison’s testimony was a pivotal moment during Bankman-Fried’s trial. She revealed that he had directed her to misuse customer funds without their consent, shifting most of the blame for FTX’s collapse onto him. Her personal life also became a media spectacle, with her relationship with Bankman-Fried and leaked diary entries being widely discussed.

Support for Ellison came from friends and family, including her parents, who appealed for leniency based on her past charitable work and difficult experiences. Meanwhile, Bankman-Fried has appealed his sentence, though Judge Kaplan noted his lack of genuine remorse during the proceedings.

Ryan Salame, another FTX executive, was sentenced to seven and a half years for his role in the fraudulent scheme. Other top FTX executives, Gary Wang and Nishad Singh, are awaiting sentencing in the coming weeks.
