The Haitian Bridge Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping migrants and immigrants, has filed criminal charges against Donald Trump and U.S. Senate candidate JD Vance. The charges stem from their inflammatory comments regarding Haitian immigrants, which have reportedly incited violence in Springfield, Ohio, including over 30 bomb threats and the evacuation of schools and government buildings.
The organization’s filing comes after Trump and Vance made false accusations about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, claiming they were stealing pets and engaging in violent behavior. The charges against them include disrupting public services, making false alarms, telecommunications harassment, aggravated menacing, and complicity. Ohio law permits citizens to file criminal charges similar to a prosecutor.
The Haitian Bridge Alliance seeks a court ruling to confirm there is probable cause to support the charges and to issue arrest warrants for both Trump and Vance. The affidavit states, “Trump and Vance have knowingly spread a false and dangerous narrative by claiming that Springfield, Ohio’s Haitian community is criminally killing and eating neighbors’ dogs and cats, and killing and eating geese.” It emphasizes that these accusations have been repeated during various public appearances, including presidential debates and social media.
Despite evidence refuting their claims, Trump continued to promote the false narrative, while Vance has openly stated he is willing to “create stories” for political gain. The affidavit describes their actions as part of an “orchestrated … campaign of lies” that falsely portrays Haitians in Springfield as a threat.
The document highlights that local institutions have been forced to evacuate and that essential resources have been redirected to address the ongoing threats against the community. While local prosecutors have not taken action, the filing by citizens obligates a prosecuting attorney to respond publicly.
Both Trump and Vance have hinted at a visit to Springfield, prompting the Haitian Bridge Alliance to request a court decision before their arrival. The affidavit states, “This should be done before Trump fulfills his threat to visit Springfield – despite Mayor Rob Rue’s request that he not do so – so that he may be arrested upon arrival for his criminal acts.”
