Former FBI Deputy Director McCabe Suggests Trump Could Be Viewed as a Russian Asset

Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has stated that Donald Trump could be viewed as a Russian asset, but not in the conventional sense of an actively recruited agent. In a recent podcast appearance on One Decision, McCabe expressed his concerns about Trump's connections with Russia. He clarified that while Trump may not be a formal agent, his behavior and actions towards Russia, particularly his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, raise serious questions.

McCabe, who was fired by Trump in 2018, referred to Trump’s conduct during phone calls and meetings with Putin as suspicious, noting that Trump’s public comments often seemed overly favorable to the Russian leader. He also raised concerns about Trump’s stance on NATO and Ukraine, questioning his reluctance to fully support efforts against Russian aggression.

In the podcast, McCabe pointed out that Trump’s view on the Ukraine-Russia war further amplified doubts. Trump claimed that Russia would not have invaded Ukraine if he had remained president and suggested that the war should be swiftly negotiated to end. He also falsely accused Vice President Kamala Harris of failing to prevent the war through diplomatic means. Harris, however, rebutted Trump's claims, highlighting her efforts to support Ukraine's defense and warning about Putin’s broader ambitions in Europe.

McCabe, reflecting on his time leading the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, explained that the pattern of Trump’s behavior with Putin might stem from either a misunderstanding of geopolitical issues or a deeper, potentially economic interest. Though nothing has been definitively proven, McCabe emphasized that these factors warrant serious consideration.

He also expressed concern about a potential second term for Trump, noting that Russia has a long history of attempting to meddle in U.S. politics. Their objective, McCabe said, has often been to create chaos and division in the American political landscape, and Trump’s actions have given Russia opportunities to advance these goals.
