Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has urged all stakeholders involved in the upcoming Edo governorship election to prioritize peace and security. In a statement released by his Media Adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan called for a focus on lawful conduct during the election set for Saturday, September 21.
Jonathan emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment for democracy to thrive. He noted that while Nigeria has enjoyed 25 years of civil rule, the essence of democracy diminishes if citizens cannot freely exercise their political choices.
He placed responsibility on the police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to act as impartial referees in the electoral process. Jonathan urged security agencies to maintain neutrality and avoid actions that could disrupt a fair electoral environment.
The former president also highlighted the need for INEC to operate transparently to build confidence among all participants in the election. He warned that any loss of faith in the electoral process could lead to political disputes and unrest, undermining both development and democracy.
Jonathan concluded by stating that a credible leadership selection process free from manipulation is essential for democracy to thrive, allowing citizens to choose leaders who can provide good governance and promote peace and prosperity.
