The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against unauthorized property developments in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme by issuing contravention notices to over 280 property owners and occupiers. This move was announced by Ekundayo Alebiosu, the Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, on Tuesday, September 17.
According to Alebiosu, the contravention notices were issued on Saturday, September 14. These notices require property occupants to provide necessary documentation and approvals for their buildings within seven days. Failure to comply with this directive will result in demolition notices being issued.
The properties affected include completed structures, ongoing construction projects, and undeveloped lands. A technical assessment by the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development revealed that these properties did not have the required government authorization.
Alebiosu emphasized the government's commitment to maintaining the safety and sustainability of Lagos State's coastal areas. He urged property owners to either remove their structures voluntarily or regularize their documents to avoid penalties.
"The issuance of these contravention notices is a clear signal that illegal encroachments will not be tolerated," Alebiosu stated. He warned that the government would continue to enforce regulations to prevent further deterioration of the waterfront environment.
This action aims to restore order and discourage future illegal activities, contributing to the overall development and sustainability of Lagos State's coastal areas.
