Manchester City Could Face Expulsion from Competitions Over Financial Rule Breaches

 

Manchester City could potentially be expelled from all football competitions if found guilty of violating financial regulations, according to reports. The hearing into the club's 115 alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, spanning from 2009 to 2018, began on Monday.

City is accused of failing to provide accurate financial information and misreporting payments to players and managers. These charges stem from an investigation initiated after German publication Der Spiegel released documents from the "Football Leaks" in 2018, which suggested that City funneled money from its UAE-based owners through sponsorships.

According to The Telegraph, the consequences for City, if found guilty, could be severe, with potential expulsion from the Premier League and other competitions. Many Premier League clubs reportedly reject the idea of a points deduction and are pushing for harsher penalties, including removal from the league.

Rules governing England’s two major domestic tournaments—the FA Cup and EFL Cup—also suggest City’s future participation could be at risk. Clause 31 of the FA Cup rules states that a club removed from its league can be expelled from the competition. The same principle applies to the EFL Cup, where participation is based on league membership.

If found guilty, Manchester City's future in English football could be in jeopardy as they await the outcome of the hearing.
