Missouri Executes Marcellus Williams Despite Prosecutor's Push to Overturn Conviction

On Tuesday, Missouri carried out the execution of Marcellus “Khaliifah” Williams, despite objections from prosecutors who had sought to overturn his conviction. The 55-year-old was executed by lethal injection following a long legal battle that raised concerns over potential wrongful conviction.

Williams was convicted of the 1998 murder of Lisha Gayle, a social worker and former journalist. He was accused of breaking into her home, fatally stabbing her, and stealing personal items. However, no forensic evidence linked him to the crime scene or the murder weapon, and the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, along with the victim’s family, had expressed opposition to his execution.

In a joint statement, his lawyer, Tricia Rojo Bushnell, condemned the execution, calling it a failure of justice. She criticized Missouri's decision to prioritize “finality over truth” and called for an end to such practices.

Williams's case had attracted national attention, with civil rights advocates and lawmakers arguing for clemency. Despite efforts to halt the execution, including multiple DNA tests that failed to link Williams to the crime, Missouri Governor Mike Parson pushed forward with the execution. The U.S. Supreme Court also denied a final appeal, allowing the execution to proceed.

Williams, who served as an imam and poet during his time in prison, maintained his innocence until his death. His final written statement read: “All Praise Be to Allah In Every Situation!!!”

The execution has sparked outrage, with critics like NAACP President Derrick Johnson calling it another example of racial injustice. Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush also condemned the execution, labeling it a failure of justice. Despite widespread opposition, Missouri officials defended their decision, stating that Williams's conviction had been upheld by the courts throughout years of appeals.
