Former presidential candidate and journalist Omoyele Sowore has confirmed that the Hunger protest scheduled for October 1 will take place across Nigeria. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, September 30, Sowore stated that the protest will proceed despite warnings from the Federal Government and the Nigerian Police Force.
Sowore announced that the main protest will be held at Eagle Square in Abuja, emphasizing the widespread impact of the issues facing Nigerians, including hunger, insecurity, and hardship. He declared, “The protests will hold across all parts of Nigeria because the scale of the devastation... is national.”
He reassured the public that the protests would remain peaceful, despite previous instances of police violence against demonstrators. “Our only weapon is truth, and no amount of force or violence will prevent us from speaking truth to power,” Sowore said.
Sowore highlighted the recent rise in petrol prices, which have increased by nearly N300 per litre, and pointed to the continued devaluation of the naira and rising market prices. He also noted the alarming rise in violence from bandits and the impact of flooding on communities.
“We are prepared to come out to protest. We are determined to do so peacefully. I can assure you that thousands of voices will be raised in protest on October 1,” he stated during an interview shared on his social media.
In Lagos, protest organizers plan to begin their march at the Ikeja Under Bridge at 7:30 am. Sowore's message underscores the urgency of addressing the grievances of Nigerians in light of the government's failures to tackle these pressing issues.
