Star defender Raphael Varane has officially retired from football following a knee injury sustained during his debut match for Italian club Como. The 31-year-old, who recently joined the Serie A side after leaving Manchester United as a free agent, was substituted just 20 minutes into a Coppa Italia match.
Varane, a former France international and 2018 World Cup winner, had left Manchester United earlier this summer after his contract ended, having made 95 appearances for the club across three seasons. The central defender is also well-known for his successful career at Real Madrid, where he played 360 games over 10 seasons.
Despite signing a two-year contract with Como, with the option of an additional season, Varane’s time on the field was cut short. He had joined United from Real Madrid in 2021 and helped the club win the Carabao Cup in the 2022-23 season, followed by an FA Cup win the next year.
In a heartfelt message on social media on Wednesday, September 25, Varane reflected on his decision, saying, "All good things must come to an end." He expressed his pride in his career, stating that his accomplishments and memories brought him great fulfillment. "I want to go out strong, not just holding on to the game," he wrote on Instagram, adding, "It takes courage to listen to your heart and instinct."
Varane also shared his satisfaction with ending his career on a high note, with his final full appearance being United's FA Cup triumph at Wembley. "I have no regrets, I wouldn't change a thing. I have won more than I could have ever dreamed of, but beyond the trophies, I am proud of staying true to my principles."
As for his future, Varane hinted at a continued role with Como, though no longer as a player. "A new life begins off the pitch. I will remain with Como, just without my boots and shin pads," he said, promising to share more about his future plans soon.
Varane’s illustrious career began at French club Lens before his move to Real Madrid in 2011, where he won 18 major trophies, including three La Liga titles and four Champions League titles. On the international stage, Varane was capped 93 times for France, winning the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League.
