Reno Omokri has slammed Peter Obi, the Labour Party's 2023 presidential candidate, for questioning the federal government’s transparency in managing the funds saved from fuel subsidy removal.
In a recent interview with News Central TV, Obi emphasized the importance of clarity in government spending, urging the authorities to explain how the savings from the removal of the fuel subsidy are being utilized. He argued that if the subsidy is truly removed, the government should provide detailed information on where the funds are being redirected, such as infrastructure projects or healthcare improvements, so citizens can track and verify the benefits.
Obi also raised concerns about the rising national debt and the increasing cost of living, suggesting that the removal of the subsidy has not yet translated into visible improvements for Nigerians.
However, Reno Omokri responded sharply, accusing Obi of hypocrisy. Omokri pointed out that Obi himself has not been transparent about campaign funds during the 2023 elections, particularly donations from Nigerians in the diaspora. He referenced comments by Julius Abure, Labour Party's embattled chairman, who alleged that Obi and his associates took control of campaign funds without properly informing the party about how they were spent.
Omokri also criticized Obi's past actions as Governor of Anambra State, claiming that he had placed state funds in a bank where he had personal financial interests. Additionally, he brought up Obi’s involvement in the Pandora Papers scandal, where he was accused of hiding assets in offshore accounts.
Omokri concluded by questioning Obi’s moral standing to demand transparency from the federal government when, according to him, Obi has failed to demonstrate accountability in his own dealings.
