Republicans Disheartened by Trump’s ‘Poor’ and ‘Unprepared’ Debate Showing

Donald Trump’s campaign is scrambling to contain the fallout after a disappointing performance in his first presidential debate against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Despite Trump claiming victory, many Republicans and political commentators agreed that he struggled during the debate, losing ground to Harris on several key moments.

Throughout the debate, Harris repeatedly challenged Trump, causing him to stray off-topic and become visibly frustrated. Although Trump insisted the debate was a success, declaring, "We won the debate," many Republicans disagreed, feeling he missed several opportunities to address policy issues.

After the debate, Trump made an unusual move by visiting the media spin room, a space typically reserved for campaign surrogates. He downplayed the possibility of a second debate, suggesting Harris needed it more because she "lost." In contrast, Harris remained focused on her vice-presidential duties, appearing alongside President Joe Biden at events commemorating the 9/11 attacks.

Several prominent Fox News analysts criticized Trump's performance. Brit Hume remarked, "Trump had a bad night," noting that he focused too much on old grievances instead of addressing current political challenges.

One defining moment came when Harris, after hesitating, approached Trump’s lectern to shake his hand – the first such gesture at a presidential debate since 2016. This move set the tone for the night, with Harris gaining the upper hand by displaying confidence. At one point, she joked about attendees leaving Trump’s rallies "out of exhaustion and boredom," prompting him to launch into a lengthy comparison of their rally sizes instead of addressing a key immigration question.

Republicans, including former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who helped prepare Trump for his 2016 debates, expressed disappointment in Trump's performance. "She was very well-prepared, and he kept chasing distractions instead of focusing on the key issues," Christie said. Others echoed this sentiment, with Guy Benson, editor of the conservative site Townhall, agreeing that Harris accomplished her goals during the debate.

Many Republican lawmakers also voiced frustration over Trump’s lack of discipline, with one House member expressing disappointment that Trump did not remain composed. "She knew exactly how to provoke him," the lawmaker said, adding that Trump’s road to victory became much narrower after the debate.

As the dust settles, it is clear that Republicans are concerned about the impact of this debate on Trump's campaign, with many feeling he needs to refocus if he hopes to regain momentum.
