Russell Brand has generated considerable attention after sharing images of himself performing a baptism while dressed only in white underwear. The 49-year-old actor, who was baptized in the River Thames earlier this year, has expressed a growing commitment to Christianity since 2023.
In a recent post, Brand noted, “It might seem a bit soon to be baptizing people, but the Apostles did it on day one, so here we are,” alongside a photo of himself and a colleague performing the ceremony. The person being baptized, however, was fully clothed in surf gear, which led to confusion and outrage online.
Critics have accused Brand of mocking Christianity, with some commenters questioning the appropriateness of the attire. One user remarked, “Am I the only one wondering why the guy getting baptized is in surf gear and the two baptizing them are in their literal underwear? This is quite odd.” Another added, “Doing this in your underwear is utterly inappropriate. This feels like you're purposely mocking Christianity.”
Brand's recent actions come amidst ongoing investigations into sexual assault allegations against him from the previous year. Despite the controversy, he continues to be vocal about his faith and his desire to invite others to join him on his spiritual journey.
