Senate Passes South West Development Bill in Final Reading

The Nigerian Senate has approved the South West Development Bill after its third reading, paving the way for the creation of a commission focused on tackling infrastructural and environmental challenges in the South West region.

The bill's passage followed a report by Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties. Lawan emphasized that once the commission is established, pending presidential approval, it will receive funding from the federation account, international development partners, and other sources. These funds will be used to address infrastructure deficits and resolve ecological issues within the region.

Originally introduced in February 2024, the bill outlines the commission's responsibilities, which include managing government-allocated funds for capital projects such as road construction, housing development, and other infrastructure improvements. Additionally, it is tasked with handling environmental and ecological problems to accelerate the socioeconomic growth of South West states.

With the bill now awaiting presidential assent, the commission's establishment could help drive growth and solve long-standing development challenges in the South West region of Nigeria.
