Southern Kaduna Elders Sue Former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for Human Rights Violations

Elders from Southern Kaduna have filed a lawsuit against the former governor of the state, Nasiru El-Rufai, claiming violations of their fundamental human rights, unlawful imprisonment, and harassment.

The elders brought their case before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, stating that they were unjustly detained during El-Rufai's administration in 2019. Led by Aweni Dio Maisamari, the former chairman of the Adara Development Association, the plaintiffs are seeking 2.3 billion naira in damages for their alleged wrongful arrests and the violation of their rights.

During a court session on Tuesday, Justice Hauwa’u Buhari adjourned the case to allow for proper notification of the respondents, in accordance with legal procedures outlined in the Fundamental Human Rights Act.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, Gloria Ballason, stated that her clients were imprisoned for over three months without any evidence against them. She alleged that El-Rufai specifically ordered the detention of Maisamari, the president of the Adara Development Association, without reasonable grounds for suspicion.

“We are pursuing this case due to the unjust imprisonment of the Adara elders in 2019,” Ballason explained. She noted that the elders sought to enforce their fundamental rights following the suspicious killing of their chief, Rafael Maiwada Galadima, around the same time as their arrests.

According to Ballason, after their lengthy detention, the court dismissed the case against the elders due to a lack of evidence. She emphasized that the El-Rufai administration was notorious for rights violations, including unlawful killings and wrongful imprisonments.
