The Federal Government has announced an increase in the consolidated public service salary structure, known as CONPSS. Ekpo Nta, the chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Tuesday.
Nta explained that the review followed the recent enactment of the Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with labor leaders. The salary increase will benefit various groups, including workers in the consolidated research and allied institutions salary structure (CONRAISS), the consolidated universities academic salary structure (CONUASS), and the consolidated tertiary institutions salary structure II (CONTISS II). Additionally, it will apply to the consolidated polytechnics and colleges of education academic staff salary structure (CONPCASS), consolidated tertiary educational institutions salary structure (CONTEDISS), and consolidated medical salary structure (CONMESS).
Other affected salary structures include the consolidated health salary structure (CONHESS), consolidated paramilitary salary structure (CONPASS), consolidated police salary structure (CONPOSS), consolidated intelligence community salary structure (CONICSS), and consolidated armed forces salary structure (CONAFSS).
Nta stated that this salary review is a result of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024 and the agreement reached by the committee on salary adjustments, which was finalized on September 20. This agreement was made between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the trade union representatives of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council.
It is important to note that President Bola Tinubu signed the minimum wage bill into law on July 29, which raised the country’s minimum wage from 30,000 naira to 70,000 naira. The adjustments in salaries for civil servants are set to take effect from July 29, 2024.
