A suspect was arrested on Sunday afternoon after authorities thwarted an attempted attack on former U.S. President Donald Trump at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The FBI described the incident as "an attempted assassination" after a Secret Service agent spotted the muzzle of an AK-47-style rifle near the Trump International Golf Club.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was found with an assault rifle and a scope near the property, according to three law enforcement officials who spoke to the Associated Press. Routh, a North Carolina resident and registered Democrat, was later arrested by deputies on Interstate 95 after a witness provided crucial details, including a photo of the suspect's vehicle.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that Trump, who was golfing at the time, was unharmed. Security personnel quickly secured the area as the suspect fled, but law enforcement apprehended him shortly after.
A GoPro camera and backpacks found at the scene fueled speculation that the suspect may have intended to livestream the attack.
This marks the second reported attempt on Trump’s life in recent months, following a shooting at a Pennsylvania rally in July. President Joe Biden condemned the violence, stating there is "no place for political violence in this country." Trump also reassured his supporters that he was "safe and well" after the incident.
An investigation is ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody while authorities prepare charges.
