In a statement posted on their official X account (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the movement encouraged citizens to participate in the protest, using the hashtags #FearlessInOctober and #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria2.0. The statement read, "Nigerians, brace yourselves: General Bola Ahmed Tinubu, a symbol of hardship and corruption, has taken the helm. Mark your calendars for October 1 and join the protest to fight for our nation's future and end the oppressive rule."
This call to action comes as Nigerians grapple with unprecedented fuel price increases following the removal of petrol subsidies in May 2023. The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has reported prices ranging from N855 to N897 per litre, with some independent marketers raising prices as high as N1,200 per litre.
Since the subsidy removal, petrol prices have more than tripled, worsening the economic challenges faced by many Nigerians, who depend on fuel for transportation and electricity. The rising fuel costs have led to widespread frustration and heightened concerns about the government’s economic policies.
In addition to the protest call, there are growing concerns among oil marketers about the potential price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. With the landing cost of imported petrol now at approximately N1,120 per litre, the uncertainty surrounding fuel prices continues to strain both dealers and consumers.
The Take-It-Back Movement’s October 1 protest is expected to further ignite public debate on Tinubu’s leadership and the direction of Nigeria’s economy under his administration.
