United Auto Workers Accused of Retaliation Over Organizer's Firing and Contract Delays

The United Auto Workers (UAW), one of the largest trade unions in the U.S., faces accusations of retaliating against an internal union organizer and delaying contract negotiations. UAW Staff United, formed in March, represents UAW employees across various locations including New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

In a recent incident, Alex Chan, an organizer for UAW Region 9A, was informed via email that their contract would not be renewed, marking the first time an organizer's contract was terminated before the end of their three-year term. UAW Staff United claims this non-renewal is an act of retaliation and is calling for Chan’s reinstatement. They plan to protest outside a UAW political leadership conference in New York City.

The internal union, which has been bargaining with UAW since August of last year, accuses the organization of using bad-faith tactics similar to those they fight against with major automakers. The UAW Staff United alleges that negotiations have been unnecessarily prolonged, with unresolved issues such as job security, economics, and grievance processes.

Chan emphasized that their dismissal not only impacts their livelihood but also affects ongoing campaigns, some of which are nearing crucial phases. The organizer expressed frustration over the 3% annual raise proposed by the UAW, calling it inadequate compared to contracts negotiated for other union members.

Similar conflicts have emerged in other unions. The National Education Association, for example, faced a three-day strike in July, with their employees locked out before a resolution was reached in August.

The UAW declined to comment, citing its policy on personnel matters, but insiders maintain that the union is bargaining in good faith and regularly negotiates agreements with other staff unions.
